Funny how you just can’t understand peoples’ frustration with the new GUI because it’s already on their app, ipads, etc., then towards the end you admit that Directv satellite users are getting older. This is correct–we don’t want to watch Directv on an app, on an ipad, etc.–we just want to watch on TV! And then you blather on about how wonderful this new 1088 GUI is. Bull. It may be wonderful for teenagers with perfect eyesight but I challenge you to go the home of an elderly Directv customer (of which there are many) and get their impression. Why don’t you do a podcast on that? You know why–because you’ll get an earful.
Go ahead–watch live sports and pause it to see the stats at the bottom of the screen–you CAN’T because of the horrible gray box that takes up the botton 1/3 of the screen! At least it goes away quicker now in the 1088 update but it’s still unnecessary to begin with. I’ve seen screenshots of the DirectvNow when paused–NO GRAY BOX THAT BLOCKS THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN.
Go ahead–try to record first run/repeats of a series like “The Goldberg’s” from, let’s say POPTV, which plays the episodes in order. YOU CAN’T–your “Upcoming Recordings” will be littered with airings of “The Goldberg’s” from ABC (even the ABC stations you don’t get), the CW, NikEast, NikWest, and whatever other station is airing “The Goldberg’s”. THEY TOOK AWAY THE ABILITY TO RECORD A SERIES FROM A SINGLE CHANNEL AND THIS HAS NOT BEEN FIXED IN THE 1088 UPDATE WHICH I ALREADY HAVE! This is a major downgrade from the previous GUI!
Yes the text looks better and taking away the logos makes the menus move much quicker. However, NOT being able to record a series from a specific channel is a dealbreaker for me. I’m lucky enough to have the distant network feeds from the West Coast so I can record series on the West coast national networks so it doesn’t interfere with the three people in my household’s prime time tv viewing.
I’ve been a continuous customer since Dec. 1996 and if they don’t bring back the ability to record a series from a specific channel, I’m out. I’m no longer on any type of contract so if it isn’t fixed by the end of the summer I will be looking for other options.
