2022-23 EDITION: Best option for satellite TV in a car?

When you write a blog for over ten years, you sometimes get the chance to answer the same question a few times over. Sometimes the answer ends up quite different. The last time I took a look at this question was back in 2018, and at that time I was focused on a satellite TV product from KVH. The Tracvision A9 is still out there and Solid Signal still sells it. But is it the best option?

Cars vs. RVs

Obviously the biggest difference between a car and an RV is going to be the size. But more importantly, a car isn’t really the right choice for a long trip and people who take long trips are going to want RVs whenever possible. The convenience of having some space to walk around in, plus a kitchen and a bathroom, make the difference between a hard trip and an easy one. That’s why people choose RVs, of course.

It seems to me there’s going to be a fairly small number of people who will want to trick out a car with satellite TV. Cars really work well for shorter trips, but when you’re talking about satellite TV, you’re thinking of longer trips.

What to know about the TracVision A9

The TracVision A9, like other smaller satellite systems for mobile, is a single-satellite solution. For DISH users, that can mean longer channel changes as the system tracks a different satellite. For DIRECTV users, at least in 2022-23, it’s usually going to mean standard definition and possibly a loss of local channels. DIRECTV’s high-definition, local, and 4K channels are located on satellites not served by the TracVision A9.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider the A9 if you really want to watch TV in your car. It just means there may be a better option.

Streaming is the best form of satellite TV?

I know, it doesn’t sound like it makes sense. But, the best way to watch satellite TV in your car may just be to stream it.

Both DIRECTV and DISH have robust apps that let you watch hundreds of channels of live TV, plus offering access to your DVR playlist and 20,000 on-demand programs, all from one place. The apps are free to existing satellite subscribers and using them is probably all you need to do in a car.

A tablet with a cellular connection is all you’ll need, along with the DIRECTV or DISH apps. This gives you the option to watch TV comfortably when you do decide you need it in a car.

There’s just one more accessory you should consider.

Consider a cell phone signal booster

A cell phone signal booster like this weBoost Drive Reach is a must-have if you’re serious about cell service in the car. Cell phone signal boosters take weak signal and amplify it for use in the car. They’ll help you connect with distant towers, making sure you get a clear connection no matter where you are. That clear connection is going to help you watch the TV shows you want, and it’s also going to give great voice and data service to everyone in the vehicle.

Choose a cell phone signal booster and you’ll find that being in the car is a lot more fun. They can be installed easily by most DIYers, too. Just shop at Solid Signal for the cell phone signal booster you want. If you’re not sure which one is right for you, call us! We’re here during East Coast business hours at 888-233-7563. If it’s after hours, just fill out the form below and we’ll get back to you, usually within one business day.
