NEW VIDEOS: Learn about DIRECTV Gemini

You can’t blame a guy for being excited. It’s been eight long years since DIRECTV had new client hardware. I was beginning to feel a little like a Cubs fan! Well, the drought is over. DIRECTV’s Gemini for Satellite and Internet is the box that satellite TV fans have waited for. Not to be confused with their identical looking C71 device (which is in the process of being renamed) this box is only intended to work with Genie DVRs as a client.

The box that does tricks

The big difference with the Gemini, other than its being almost a decade newer and faster, is that it gives you access to all your streaming favorites without having to use a second device. This means no changing inputs, no picking up a different remote, and no HDMI problems.

See for yourself

In addition to the review that’s already been published, I’ve produced a pair of videos that take you deeper in depth with the Gemini and what it’s capable of.

First, a review video that treads a lot of the same ground that the written review has shown you. However, it’s worth it to see how things work with live video instead of screen grabs. There are a few things not shown in the review as well.

Next, I produced a review of the setup experience. Honestly this is mostly just a live screen grab of what happens when you connect the thing up for the first time. It takes you from first boot to the point where you need to call to activate. Once you call to activate, there’s a little more about setting up your Google account that I’m not showing you. If you have a gmail address or an Android phone, you already have a Google account. If you don’t, they’re free and easy to get at google.com.

Now here’s why you want to go to Solid Signal to get your Gemini

Folks, I make no secret of the fact that this blog is sponsored by SolidSignal.com. It’s right in the name of the blog. But I want to take a minute to explain why you want to use Solid Signal instead of going straight to DIRECTV for your Gemini.

I’m calling it as I see it

DIRECTV is in the process of renaming all their services to make them as confusing as possible. For example, the service formerly known as DIRECTV Stream (and AT&T TV, and AT&T TV Now, and DIRECTV NOW), will be known as DIRECTV for Internet if you use their streaming box. It will still be known as DIRECTV Stream if you use your own streaming box.

The device originally known as the AT&T Osprey, then the C71, then the “DIRECTV Stream device,” will likely be known as the “DIRECTV Gemini for Internet,” while the new one, the one I’m reviewing, will be known as the “DIRECTV Gemini for Satellite and Internet.” It’s very confusing, even to the professionals.

Here’s where Solid Signal comes in

When you get a Gemini from us, one of our technicians — a real live person — will review your order before it leaves the warehouse. That way if you’ve picked the wrong thing, it won’t be too late. Then, when you call for activation, we can help you with installation and activation. Our folks in Michigan answer the phone without long phone trees, and if you want to keep working with the same person, just ask for their direct line. They’ll actually give it to you!

If you want the ultimate in service, call us at 888-233-7563. We’re here during East Coast business hours. If it’s after hours, no problem! Fill out the form below and we’ll get back to you, usually within one business day.
