Which DIRECTV remotes work with the new Gemini?

When it comes to Gemini, it’s all good news. DIRECTV’s new box for its residential customers really brings the goods. It’s a Genie client like the older generation, plus it adds 4K, smaller size, even lower power use, and of course the ability to run all the streaming apps you want.

It even comes with a voice-enabled remote that pairs easily and works in more scenarios than the Genie remote. All this is great news.

But, of course, any time there’s a change there will be people who are happy with the way things have always been. When DIRECTV rolled out its RC24 remote back in the mid-2000s (the grandfather to today’s RC66X “white” remote) there were those who wanted to use the older RCA-style remote. When the Genie remote was rolled out in 2014, there were people who were in love with the white remote and wanted to use it instead.

This brings us to today. This is the Gemini remote:

Personally I think it’s a win. It’s lighter, it feels better in your hand, and it does away with a lot of redundant buttons. But, if you don’t like that, I respect your choice. A lot of folks are worried about the voice command button and don’t want it in their houses. Others just “know where the buttons are” on the old remote and don’t want to give it up. Hey, I totally get it.

Good news for those who like the older remotes

If you like this remote:

Or if you like this remote:

Well you’re in luck. You can use either of these remotes with the Gemini if you want. Some of the buttons won’t be labeled the same (for example, the HOME button on the Gemini remote corresponds to the MENU button on older remotes) but that shouldn’t be a problem for you. You’re already used to pushing the right button to get the right thing. It shouldn’t be a problem.

Here’s what you need to know

These remotes will work, but they’ll only work in infrared mode. That means you’ll have to point the remote a little more carefully. But, a lot of people are fine with that. I know I am.

If you have a remote that you already use, you may need to reset it to put it into infrared mode. This is very easy and I have a tutorial for that here.
