Which is better on a boat… satellite TV or satellite internet?

If you have a yacht, you want the best of everything. But is “everything” really possible? Sometimes no matter how much you have in the bank account, you have to make tough decisions. Sure, you want to have live TV AND internet on your boat, but what if you have to pick one? Which one should you pick? Let’s take a look at both options and hopefully it will get easier to make a decision.

Scenario 1: You have more then 3-4 people on the boat

If you’re talking about a workboat, or a very large yacht, you might have to entertain more than just a handful of people. Here, the answer is clear. With satellite TV, you can have a virtually unlimited number of satellite receivers and they will all work perfectly. On the other hand, if you provide satellite internet, you probably won’t be able to get good streaming video for more than 3-4 people, if that. At that point, the internet speed will be too low. Satellite TV is the best bet here.

Scenario 2: You have just a few people, but you’re really into shopping not video

Here again this is a pretty easy one to call. Satellite TV on boats isn’t really interactive at all. Satellite internet is. If you’re only interested in surfing, shopping, texting, that sort of thing, you’ll love satellite internet. You can stay connected 100 miles off shore and you can choose a data plan that makes sense for you.

Scenario 3: You’re going to stay within a few miles of shore

This is a case where you can have the best of both worlds. With cellular booster technology, it’s possible to get cell service up to 10 miles offshore. That’s enough that you’ll feel like the problems on land are far, far away. You’ll still get all the benefits of using your phone, so you’ll have some money to spend on live TV. Satellite TV works really, really well when you’re not far from shore. If you’re near your home port you’ll even get local channels.

Scenario 4: You want to be futureproof.

Now, here’s a tough one. It’s very hard to know what’s coming in the future. Certainly the world of satellite internet is evolving quickly. This means that money you spend today might need to be spent again in just a few years. On the other hand, satellite TV is a stable technology. It may not be as glamorous as it once was, but it’s here to stay. Chances are very good that the system you put in today will still work perfectly a decade from now.
