Hardly a week goes by without someone asking me my opinion about Starlink. There’s no doubt that the internet service has captured a lot of people’s attention. It’s not necessarily cheaper than other alternatives. It’s not necessarily faster. But, it’s unquestionably cooler, and perhaps that does actually count for something. I’ll admit I’ve bought products before just because they were cool, and you probably have too.
The long-term question of Starlink
For the most part I’ve tended to take a “wait-and-see” approach to Starlink. I’ll completely admit that SpaceX, the service’s owner, has done some amazingly disruptive things with space travel. The company’s owner has also upended the electric car market. He was one of the original owners of PayPal, which is where much of his money came from. There’s a history there of disrupting industries that desperately needed disruption. On the other hand, you may not like some of the things he says, or the way he’s managing some of his other ventures right now. None of that is really the point.
The real point is how Starlink continues to evolve, and quickly. The company’s low-earth-orbit satellites aren’t designed to last very long. Like cell towers, they’re expected to be replaced every few years as faster services come along. Also like cellular services, you’re probably going to have to plan on replacing your equipment every few years until things settle down.
It’s a predictable pattern in tech. You’ll pay a lot for something in its early years, but as it becomes a commodity, it gets cheaper. Raise your hand if you paid over $2,000 for a television in the ’00s that would cost less than $200 today. (For the record, I’m raising my hand.) If that’s your style, I salute you. The world works because people like you are ready to invest in new technologies. It’s not always an easy road to walk, and it certainly is an expensive one.
But let’s be honest, this isn’t about how you’ll use Starlink in the future. It’s about how you’ll use it in the here and now. And in the here and now, you need accessories.
