Do yourself a favor and load the DIRECTV app on your streaming box.

Here’s a suggestion that doesn’t seem like it would make sense. DIRECTV does have an app for smartphones, as well as Roku, Fire OS, and Apple TV boxes. I’m telling you that you’re going to want to load it if you can, and you’ll thank me later.

Hey shouldn’t this blog be all about satellite TV?

Yes, it’s true. Solid Signal is one of the nation’s largest satellite TV dealers. And I stand by my feeling that satellite TV isn’t going anywhere. There are still close to 20 million households, and that means about 40-50 million people, who use satellite TV every day. That’s a pretty big number for people to say “oh it’s going away.”

But yes, there’s the internet and it competes for your attention. That’s why DISH and DIRECTV both offer internet-delivered on demand programs. You can go to your DIRECTV box and search for something and often find it. But chances are when you’re searching for something to watch now, as opposed to something to record, you’re looking on your streaming device first.

How to use the DIRECTV app for streaming

There’s just one DIRECTV app and it works the same for people who pay only for streaming and people who pay for satellite and streaming. It’s called DIRECTV and you can read my review of it here.

When you install it, you’ll get about 100 channels of streaming live TV, access to your playlists, and even the ability to set up recordings. Plus you’ll get access to the entire DIRECTV on-demand library.

That’s the real key here, that’s the thing you want.

It’s the solution for “app bloat.”

I used to install every streaming app from every channel I had. I mean, Bravo, SYFY, whatever. Why? Because if I wanted to watch something, it was the only way I could search for it. If you install the DIRECTV app, though, you can search its on-demand library for stuff in your programming package. You don’t have to download 20 apps, sign into all of them, and that whole mess.

You can even use the universal search on Roku and Apple TV and it will give you back results from the DIRECTV app. This probably works on Fire devices as well but I’ll be real honest with you, I don’t have one to test.

Personally I think this is a big benefit and it helps solve the problem I talked about here. If you’re trying to watch all the movies in a franchise, you’ll often have to go to several apps to get them. Some won’t be on any app, but they will be on DIRECTV. Adding the DIRECTV app to your streaming box gives you one place to search for all of it.

It just keeps getting better

This is just another reason that you can’t count satellite TV out. It’s not only a great value, but there’s a lot of content you can’t find anywhere else. If you’re interested in seeing the best entertainment, a satellite TV subscription has to be part of the package.
